I stopped and talked with this guy on US Hwy. 24 outside of Moberly. He'd lost his job, his wife divorced him and his house burned down. So, he loaded 300 lbs. of clothes and personal stuff on a bike trailer and headed for a small town near near LA; about 2500 miles.
He was debating whether to go the northern route, which is longer, or the southern way, which crosses the Mojave desert. It regularly gets over 110 degrees there this time of year. He said he rides downhill and walks uphill.
Good luck!
